Coronations in Bratislava
The largest culture event in Slovakia where you can experience the historical coronation ceremony of the Hungarian kings. Coronation ceremony is stage-managed in St. Martin's Cathedral according to historical documents. During the ceremony the king is anointed and receives the coronation insignia: St. Stephen's crown, sword, cloak, sceptre and orb. Other parts of the ceremony take place in the streets of the town: the king dubs noblemen to become knights of the Golden Spur order, vow his homeland and rides on his horse to the top of the coronation hill and makes four strikes with his sword towards the four points of the compass. During the coronation celebration, representatives of other royal towns come to salute the king, craftsmen present contemporary crafts, wine flows from a fountain, knight tournaments and folk dances are presented, oxen is roasted and beer from the royal brewery is served. This event is organized every year during the first week of September and chronologically presents the individual kings crowned in Bratislava.
